Propelled by a strong April, Missouri crosses the billion dollar mark in marijuana sales

Since Missouri’s first month of legal recreational marijuana sales, the market has been thriving.

While Missouri’s medical marijuana program was immensely successful in its own right, the addition of adult use sales has propelled Missouri to one of the biggest markets in the country.

Missouri has tripled monthly retail dollars since the launch of recreational sales, surpassing $100 million in combined sales through each of the first three months of adult use marijuana sales.

In April, adult-use sales in Missouri reached $91.5 million, while medical sales dropped slightly to $30.1 million. Since the beginning of recreational sales in February, combined marijuana sales in the state have averaged $116.73 million per month, with total sales of $387.19 million through the first four months of 2023.

Two years of Missouri monthly marijuana sales in millions

Data released today by the Division of Cannabis Regulation shows medical marijuana sales in Missouri are projected to exceed $300 million in 2023, and since the first retail sale of medical marijuana in October 2020, dispensaries in the state have sold a combined $992.50 million in marijuana and marijuana-infused products.

Now, Missouri has moved past the $1 billion dollar mark for cumulative sales since the first legal sale of marijuana in October of 2020.

Greenway confirmed with DCR staff that Missouri dispensaries surpassed the needed $7.5 million to bridge the gap to the $1 billion mark on Tuesday, May 2.

The success of the adult use market in the state has exceeded expectations thus far.  Missouri is expected to reach the $1 billion mark again in 2023, currently projected for more than $1.2 billion in annual sales in 2023.
