PA event focused on people of color and community in cannabis

Multiple partners and sponsors come together in Philadelphia, PA on September 24 and 25 to help provide industry operators with an opportunity to directly connect with communities of color in the cannabis industry and celebrate Black Cannabis Week.

Corporate sponsors of the event include Jushi, Beyond Hello Medical Dispensaries, and Holistic Industries, as well as Diasporic Alliance for Cannabis Opportunities (DACO).

Notable members of Missouri’s cannabis community are included in the event, including April Hatch, MSN, RN of the Cannabis Care Team and Abrahama Keys, Executive Director of Greater St. Louis NORML and founder of WeCann – who have been successful in previous iterations of this type of event in Missouri and are partnering to make the PA version a great event.

“Cannabis Care Team was providing industry training to dispensaries and I thought, “Maybe that has value and is something that would increase knowledge, confidence, and better prepare those wanting to get into the industry.” The others had their skillset and experience and we put together two events in MO that included sessions on resume-building, opportunities in the industry, how cannabis prohibition has affected people of color, and an intro to medical cannabis. The two events were sponsored by local NORML chapters, industry organizations, and operators who were interviewing onsite. Organizations who were dedicated to diversity and wanted to take action,” said Hatch of the participation in this PA event.

Friday’s agenda includes the Communities of Color Career Fair and Expo, while Saturday is billed as an Empowering the Community Career Event. Jason Mitchell of Soulful Warriors Collective is the keynote speaker for Saturday’s event, while Keys will speak about Cannabis History on Saturday as well. Hatch presents on Friday with Cannabis 101: Intro to Plant Medicine Certification.

Said Mitchell about his organization’s participation in the event, “I’m trying to set a good example for my son and the millions I’ve made for what I’ll call privileged classes don’t do that if I’m not contributing to making people of color receive equitable opportunities and treatment in this gigantic industry.”
