Missouri NORML to host Virtual Spring Conference on marijuana law reform
Missouri NORML, the state affiliate of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, will hold its Spring 2024 Conference virtually on Saturday, June 15, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The event, which will be streamed live on Missouri NORML’s Facebook page, aims to address critical issues surrounding marijuana law reform at both state and national levels.
The conference will commence with opening remarks from Dan Viets, J.D., Chair of the National NORML Board of Directors and Missouri NORML Coordinator. Viets will set the stage for an afternoon of discussions led by prominent figures in the marijuana reform movement.
The agenda features a series of discussions beginning at 1:30 p.m. with reports from Missouri NORML chapters, including Greater St. Louis NORML, NORML KC, and Mid-MO NORML.
At 1:45 p.m., Morgan Fox, NORML’s National Political Director, will speak about the ongoing efforts for federal legalization and the potential rescheduling of marijuana from Schedule 1 to Schedule 3. This rescheduling could have significant implications for the legal status of marijuana across the United States.
Following Fox, Paul Armentano, NORML’s National Deputy Director, will address the national efforts to limit the potency of legal marijuana products. Such legislative efforts have been introduced in various states, and similar proposals may emerge in Missouri’s General Assembly next year.
Former United States Attorney Barry Grissom will take the stage at 3:15 p.m. to discuss marijuana prohibition from a federal prosecutor’s perspective. Grissom is actively involved with the Last Prisoner Project, a national organization working to release individuals incarcerated for marijuana-related offenses.
The conference will also feature Ray Hartmann, a candidate for the United States Congress and founder of The Riverfront Times, a St. Louis alternative weekly newspaper. Hartmann, known for his long-standing role as a panelist on the PBS television program “Donnybrook,” will discuss his campaign and the importance of electing representatives who support marijuana law reform.
The event will conclude with closing remarks by Viets at 4:45 p.m., wrapping up an afternoon dedicated to exploring the evolving landscape of marijuana legislation.
