From activists to consultants to operators themselves, the following industry influencers are responsible for determining not only how the industry overcomes the obstacles of 2020, but how the industry will be better for it. Why cannabis?

Today, many veterans and active-duty military personnel feel trapped and desperate. The population I came from on active duty and the veteran population, that I am now a part of, is facing an epic healthcare crisis marked by unacceptably high homelessness, unemployment, suicide, opioid abuse, and high overdose rates. I believe cannabis presents a safe and effective method to address these issues. Cannabis and Hemp also represent the most unique opportunity in history to address numerous issues throughout society. These include ways to address issues social justice, equity, sustainability, and health.

What is your vision of the industry in Missouri?

I was an activist helping support Amendment 2 during the run-up to the November 2019 vote. I was so compelled to support this effort, as I believe cannabis and its medical use signifies what could be a revolution in medical affairs. The program here in Missouri has the potential to be the best medical cannabis program in the country, and it could serve as the basis of true research and development to help prove the efficacy of cannabis to treat symptoms of PTSD and chronic pain. I also envision the focus of the academic world and the research capacity resident in the VA hospitals in Missouri.

What opportunity/opportunities does the industry create in Missouri?

Cannabis represents the opportunity to build an industry from the underground up. It represents the opportunity for Missouri to help reduce the impact of the opioid crisis through the use of cannabis to treat pain. It also presents the opportunity to reduce suicide among populations suffering from PTSD by allowing cannabis to be a holistic part of rehabilitation and treatment. Finally, cannabis is an industry that has transitioned from illegal to essential creating the potential of thousands of new jobs and ancillary industries.

What is one thing you wish all Missourians knew about cannabis?

I wish all Missourians knew that cannabis is a medicine and that it is a viable option for medical treatment. I wish they knew the level of professionalism associated with the industry. I wish they knew that the U.S. Government holds patents on cannabis to treat a significant number of medical issues. I would also like Missourians to understand that the cannabis industry is one of the fastest-growing industries in the U.S. and that despite the fact we are the 33rd mover to legalize cannabis for medical use, we could be the nation’s center for research and contribute to advancing medical cannabis as a viable option for veterans, first responders, and others affected by PTSD and chronic pain.
