6 months later Georgia’s medical marijuana program lacks direction

After successfully navigating the legislature and more than six months after receiving Governor Brian Kemp’s signature, a Georgia law, HB 324, has stalled in the starting lane, and there’s no firm timeframe for when it will move forward.

Six months after Gov. Kemp signed the bill into law, allowing licensed companies to grow and sell medical marijuana in Georgia the program has yet to leave the starting blocks.

Why? The commission to oversee the expansion has had no appointments.

The law allows a seven-member commission oversight over Georgia’s medical marijuana operation, including developing the licensing requirements and awarding the licenses to qualifying businesses.

Georgia had previously approved medical marijuana use, but with no state licensed facilities and no oversight  patients had to continue violate state and federal laws to purchase it.
