Missouri brings in $119 million in marijuana sales in August

Missouri marijuana sales top $100 million for seven straight months.

The legal marijuana market in Missouri continues to see strong sales, despite supply issues and limitations. Since the inception of adult-use sales in February Missouri dispensaries have combined to average $119.23 million in monthly sales.

Monthly Sales Breakdown

In August, legal marijuana sales dipped, falling -3.41% from the prior month to $119 million, down from $123.20 million in July. This marks the lowest monthly sales total since February when recreational sales first launched.

Of the total monthly sales, recreational marijuana sales accounted for $97 million, while medical marijuana sales continued to trend downward sliding to $22 million. This marks the first decline in monthly adult use sales since April of this year.

Despite a sales sag last month, Missouri’s growth post adult use has been historic, with cumulative yearly sales reaching $871.60 million through August. 

   

Growing Sales

Since the inception of Missouri’s marijuana program, the state has generated a remarkable $1.47 billion in cumulative sales. 

While Missouri’s total sales numbers continue to grow, one noticeable trend is the waning enthusiasm for medical marijuana cards.

As of August 2023, the state’s medical marijuana program has seen the number of active participants fall from over 205,000 in November of 2022 to roughly 140,000 now.

Missouri also boasts one of the most robust homegrow laws in the nation, currently the state is home to more than 20,000 home cultivators with 19,347 active patient cultivators and 1,813 active consumer cultivators.

While Missouri’s cannabis industry has grown by leaps and bounds in recent months, supply chain issues, a massive recall, and an eroding patient base could signal a slowdown to the explosive growth the market has seen through the spring and summer.
