Metrc introduces new sustainable plant tags with 30% reduction in plastic usage
Metrc, the official seed-to-sale tracking system for the State of Missouri, recently announced the launch of new plant tags for licensed operators that reduces plastic usage by 30%.
The new plant tags will gradually replace the existing ones, with the transition already last month.
- Adult-use (blue) tags: Available starting February 17, 2025.
- Medical (yellow) tags: Available starting May 1, 2025.
Metrc will roll out these tags gradually to minimize material waste. The tags will be shipped in phases, so licensees will not transition to the new tag at the same time.
Key features of the new tags
-
Reduced plastic: The new plant tags are made using 30% less plastic material compared to their predecessors. While the tags will be slightly thinner, Metrc assures they will maintain the same level of durability and RFID functionality.
-
Recyclable materials: The new tags are constructed from recyclable materials, though they are not yet fully recyclable due to some adhesives used. Metrc is working towards fully recyclable tags in future iterations.
-
Design changes: The design of the new tags will be slightly different, but the compliance and regulatory information will remain unchanged. The new tags will also feature a “notes” section for better writing capacity.
Older tags can still be used during the transition period and will remain in the field. While new tags will gradually replace the old ones, they both offer the same RFID, tracking, and security capabilities. Operators should experience no disruption as changes are made.
The launch of these new plant tags is part of Metrc’s broader initiative to adopt more sustainable practices in the cannabis industry, the company said in communications.
Metrc now aims to source materials to create fully recyclable plant tags in future versions.
