Missouri marijuana sales totals in September reflect shift in market ahead of deadlines

Missouri has sold more than $3 billion in legal marijuana at retail

Missouri’s marijuana market experienced expected fluctuations in September, with total sales reaching $117.43 million, slightly lower than August’s $126.15 million.

This change, reflecting a 6.91% decrease month-over-month, is part of the predictable ebb and flow associated with seasonal and regulatory influences on the market.

The daily sales in September averaged approximately $3.91 million, down slightly from $4.07 million in August, according to data. This mild shift aligns with anticipated changes due to the end of the summer season and preemptive adjustments by retailers and wholesalers ahead of upcoming regulatory deadlines.

As the Missouri marijuana industry prepares for a November product compliance deadline,  operators have been actively discounting older stock to make way for products that meet the new regulations. This strategy has increased transaction volumes at some locations but has also reduced the average ticket price for some retailers. Such strategic price adjustments are common and were expected as businesses align with new regulations, and face potential losses for unsold inventory.

Seasonal shifts in consumer behavior

The transition from summer to autumn brings a significant shift in consumer demographics as well, particularly noticeable in tourist-heavy areas like Branson and the Lake of the Ozarks.

These locations see a natural dip in visitor numbers as the season changes, which correspondingly impacts total marijuana sales. This reduction in sales during September is seen as a regular seasonal adjustment rather than an outlier event.

Since medical marijuana sales commenced in October 2020, the sector has shown more stability compared to the recreational market.

In September, medical sales were reported at $14.08 million, slightly down from August’s $15.15 million. Recreational sales adjusted more significantly, from $111.00 million in August to $103.35 million in September. This pattern could underscore the influence of external factors such as tourism and consumer spending habits on the recreational segment, but the impact of pending deadlines has distorted the data for this year.

Analysts observing the Missouri market note that the observed fluctuations are within expected parameters and reflect adaptation to both external market forces and the urgency of turning over product ahead of regulatory changes.

From January through September 2024, Missouri’s marijuana program has generated over $1.078 billion in sales.

Cumulative sales for in Missouri have reached approximately $3.02 billion. For the year 2024, from January through September, total sales amounted to about $1.08 billion. Here’s a breakdown of the sales by quarter for 2024:

  • First Quarter (Q1): $347.87 million
  • Second Quarter (Q2): $363.28 million
  • Third Quarter (Q3): $367.17 million

Understanding the rhythm of seasonal changes helps businesses to better prepare for future shifts, ensuring sustainability and growth. The unavoidable consequence of concessions made for the sake of remaining compliant with regulations is a distorted view of the actual impacts on data.

Future Projections and Strategic Planning

Looking ahead, experts anticipate a strong finish in the final quarter of the year. This projection is based on historical sales trends, which typically show an uptick during the holiday season when cooler weather and festive activities spur consumer spending.

Missouri is estimated to bring in more than $1.4 billion in retail marijuana sales in 2024.
