Federal Legislation introduced to Preserve the Hemp Industry
Today in Washington, DC Rep. Andy Barr (R,KY) and Rep. Angie Craig (D, MN) introduced the Lawful Hemp Protection Act which would preserve the long term viability of the hemp industry in the United States.
Jay Patel of MO Hemp said, “The hemp industry of Missouri welcomes this attempt from Congress to stabilize the federal hmep industry while protecting children and consumers. It has been difficult for Missouri businesses and consumers to know what they can and can’t do as lawmakers here have tried to change the landscape. Federal legislation like the Lawful Hemp Protection Act will help businesses and farmers survive while protecting children, safeguarding consumers. It will help get bad actors out of the industry.”
According to Congressman Barr’s office: “This legislation establishes a clear federal framework for the hemp industry by setting consistent standards for cultivation, manufacturing, testing, and labeling, while prohibiting synthetic cannabinoids in finished hemp-derived products. It also supports American farmers by only allowing hemp grown, cultivated, and packaged in the United States. To further strengthen consumer protection and child safety, Rep. Barr’s legislation limits retail sales of hemp-derived consumer products to individuals 21 years of age and older and prohibits the marketing or advertisement of any hemp products towards children.”
The Lawful Hemp Protection Act ensures lawful interstate commerce for compliant hemp products. This legislation is supported by a wide array of the national Hemp industry including American Healthy Alternatives Association, American Herbal Products Association, Americans for Prosperity, Coalition for Adult Beverage Alternatives (CABA), Hemp Beverage Alliance, Hemp Industry & Farmers of America (HIFA), Kentucky Hemp Association (KYHA), Midwest Hemp Council, Team Hemp, Total Wine & More, U.S. Hemp Roundtable, Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America (WSWA).
