California legal marijuana sales reach $1.47 billion through April 2026

April marks the strongest month of the year as 2026 sales remain nearly even with 2025 pace

California legal marijuana sales totaled $1.47 billion through the first four months of 2026, keeping the nation’s largest legal cannabis market nearly even with its 2025 pace, according to state sales data reviewed by Greenway.

  • January: $366.52 million
  • February: $342.13 million
  • March: $375.51 million
  • April: $383.81 million
  • 2026 total: $1,467.97 million, or approximately $1.47 billion

April was the strongest month of the year so far, with sales increasing $8.30 million from March and $41.68 million from February. This bucks a three-year trend from 2023-2025, where April sales fell each month from March.

April 2026 outpaced the same month in 2025, when California reported $377.40 million in sales.

Compared to the first four months of 2025, California’s 2026 market is nearly flat. From January through April 2025, sales totaled $1,466.17 million. During the same period in 2026, sales totaled $1,467.97 million, an increase of $1.80 million, or 0.12%.

The monthly comparison shows a mixed start when compared to prior-year numbers.

  • January 2026: $366.52 million, down from $366.94 million in January 2025
  • February 2026: $342.13 million, up from $341.16 million in February 2025
  • March 2026: $375.51 million, down from $380.67 million in March 2025
  • April 2026: $383.81 million, up from $377.40 million in April 2025

While 2026 is slightly ahead of 2025 through April, the state remains below the higher sales levels reported earlier in the decade.

California’s January-April total peaked in 2021 at $1.76 billion. Since then, first-four-month sales declined each year through 2025.

January-April sales totals by year show the broader trend since the beginning of the decade.

  • 2020: $1.05 billion
  • 2021: $1.76 billion
  • 2022: $1.67 billion
  • 2023: $1.64 billion
  • 2024: $1.59 billion
  • 2025: $1.47 billion
  • 2026: $1.47 billion

The year-to-date total for 2026 is down from $1.59 billion in the first four months of 2024, $1.64 billion in 2023, and $1.67 billion in 2022. Compared to 2021, California’s 2026 January-April sales are lower by $292.72 million, or 16.62%.

Still, the 2026 numbers suggest the market may be leveling after several years of annual decline.

California total annual legal marijuana sales

  • 2020: $4.26 billion
  • 2021: $5.35 billion
  • 2022: $4.91 billion
  • 2023: $4.89 billion
  • 2024: $4.68 billion
  • 2025: $4.43 billion

The state’s full-year sales have declined each year since 2021. The drop from $5.35 billion in 2021 to $4.43 billion in 2025 represents a decrease of $920 million, or 17.20%.

Through April, California’s 2026 daily sales average is approximately $12.23 million. That is nearly identical to the $12.22 million daily average reported during the same period in 2025.

Daily averages for 2026

  • January: $11.82 million per day
  • February: $12.22 million per day
  • March: $12.11 million per day
  • April: $12.79 million per day

The year remains incomplete, but the first four months show California entering 2026 with a steadier sales pattern than the broader annual trend from 2021 through 2025. After multiple years of declining full-year totals, California’s 2026 market is currently tracking slightly ahead of 2025, with the strongest month of the year coming in April.
