MO Had Fifth Most Marijuana Sales of All Adult States in First Half of 2024, Surpassing Colorado

During the first half of 2024, Missouri had the fifth most legal cannabis sales, $709 million, of all adult use states. The news comes from a recent report released by national cannabis business publication Green Market Report, which was impressed with how quickly Missouri’s market has grown. The report found:

“Newcomer Missouri slid into fifth with $709 million in sales. Adult use cannabis sales in that state just began in February 2023.”

The report showed California leading the nation in legal cannabis sales, followed by Michigan, Illinois and Massachusetts, all states with far larger populations and all states that legalized cannabis before Missouri. According to the report, cannabis sales from Jan. through June in the top ten states where adult use sales are legal are as follows:

1)     California $2.086 billion

2)     Michigan $1.624 billion

3)     Illinois $847 million

4)     Massachusetts $795 million

5)     Missouri $709 million

6)     Colorado $679 million

7)     Washington $596 million

8)     Arizona $586 million

9)     Maryland $552 million

10)  Oregon $475 million

In 2024 alone, the Missouri cannabis industry, which now directly employs 19,824 Missourians, is expected to generate $238 million in sales tax revenue for veterans, public defenders, substance abuse programs, and local communities across Missouri.

“Missourians love having access to safe, affordable, lab-tested cannabis that is 100% grown in the state, and employing their friends and neighbors,” said Andrew Mullins, MoCannTrade Executive Director. “Every time Missourians purchase cannabis from licensed dispensaries, they are increasing funding for veterans, paying to automatically expunge past, nonviolent marijuana offenses from Missourians’ records, and boosting the local economies in every region of the Show Me State.”

When voters legalized adult use cannabis in November 2022, Missouri became the first state to automatically expunge past, nonviolent records by a vote of the people. To date, more than 125,000 marijuana offenses have been automatically expunged, with the extra 6% sales tax on adult use sales funding 100% of these expungements.
