10 Songs featuring cannabis through history

Music has long served as a medium for telling the stories of the times we live in and the culture of our society.  It also happens to be a topic I would happily talk about for days on end, so you can imagine my dismay at having to limit our list of songs featuring cannabis through history to only TEN choices.  The challenge wasn’t finding enough songs – every genre has its own collection of them, but the task of choosing ten that properly represent cannabis during times of prohibition and partial legalization, as well as erasing the line between types of music was tough.  After a back and forth and numerous rearrangement of the final list, I’m feeling good about the list presented to you below.  Enjoy!

  1. Brewer and Shipley – One Toke Over the Line
  2. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – You Don’t Know How it Feels
  3. Rick James – Mary Jane
  4. Afroman – Because I Got High
  5. Black Sabbath – Sweet Leaf
  6. Smoke a Little Smoke – Eric Church
  7. Ashley Monroe – Weed Instead of Roses
  8. Tool – The Pot
  9. Kacey Musgraves – Follow Your Arrow
  10. Weezer – Hash Pipe
